The Gerber Life Insurance Company has been in operation since 1967. Gerber's trademark logo – a cute, wide-eyed infant in mid-pucker – is recognized the world over from the company's many baby food products as well as from the firm's aggressive TV, print and web advertising campaigns.

Although Gerber Life is primarily thought of as strictly a "baby" life insurance provider, the company is much more than that, offering the following insurance options:

  • The Grow-Up Plan, whole life insurance available for kids from 14 days to 14 years
  • Gerber Life College Plan
  • Term Life Insurance Plan
  • Whole Life Insurance Plan
  • Guaranteed Life Burial Expense
  • Accident Protection Plan

Those six plans cover a lot of potential customers, ranging in age from 14 days to 75 years.

Gerber Life Insurance vs. primary competitors (sites similar to Gerber Life Insurance)

The Gerber Life Insurance Company is perhaps the best known provider in the child life insurance business. It is, however, hardly alone in this endeavor. One of Gerber Life's biggest competitors is Global Life – rated A+ (Superior) by A.M. Best –whose latest offer trumpets a $30,000 child whole life insurance policy for $1. That one dollar bill of course covers the first month only, with subsequent premiums based on the child's age. Those monthly premiums, however, do not differ much from Gerber Life's. And, like Gerber Life, Globe guarantees that "the benefit will never be reduced or canceled regardless of future changes in age, health or occupation as long as premiums are paid on time."

Other insurance companies offering child life insurance plans include the following:

The smart consumer would be advised to check these sites out as well, for comparison shopping is the name of the game in the highly competitive insurance business.

Gerber Life Insurance: Detailed review

The Gerber Life Insurance Company is an affiliate of the Gerber Products Company, the latter of which was founded in 1927 by Daniel Frank Gerber in Fremont, Michigan. Gerber is a dominant force in the baby food industry, offering more than 190 products in 16 countries and controlling a whopping 83% of the baby food market in the United States. In September 2007, Nestle acquired the Gerber Products Company for $5.5 billion.

The Gerber Life Insurance Company, in operation since 1967, is headquartered in Fremont, Michigan, and Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The main office is located in White Plains, New York. The company is licensed for business in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, with over 3 million policies totaling $37 billion now in force.

Since Gerber Life is primarily known for its juvenile insurance, a test stroll through their popular Grow-Up Plan was conducted. It proved to be a simple, no-hassle pursuit, beginning with "Get started here. It's easy!," whereby the child's age, sex and state of residence were entered. That was followed by a quick, one-page form listing the basics: amount of coverage desired ($25,000 is their most popular selection), beneficiary, existing insurance coverage, simple medical questions and signature. In this instance, the estimated premium for a healthy, one-year-old female was $13.06 per month for $25,000 in whole life insurance. That figure included the automatic payment option – or ETF, electronic funds transfer – in which the premium is automatically deducted every month from a checking or savings account.

Gerber Life proved to be one of those convenient, one-stop life insurance destination sites so popular on the Internet today. Enter your information for any one of Gerber's six life insurance options, and out pops a tentative quote for your monthly premium.

Parents and grandparents are the most likely customers for Gerber Life, along with aunts, uncles and godparents. The Grow-Up Plan and Gerber Life College Plan are among the most popular options, offering whole life insurance coverage with a growing cash value. The college plan offers a guaranteed benefit payment of $10,000 to $150,000 upon maturity, a valuable asset when a child is about to enter a university.

"If you’re going to buy life insurance for your child, Gerber seems like an obvious choice. The real question, however, isn’t from whom to buy the policy. It’s whether you should buy ANY policy in the first place...While the debate will undoubtedly rage on, it would appear as though purchasing life insurance for a child can make a great deal of sense—assuming one is purchasing a quality product from a solid vendor like Gerber Life Insurance who combines security and stability with solid policies." - David R. Lampsen, Personal Finance Analyst

"I got the policy for my kids because it seemed like a good value, but before I received my policy I happened to be checking on insurance for myself and found that I could get them a policy twice as large for a lower premium elsewhere. Don't let the low sounding premium fool around!" - Free Advice

"I bought Gerber life insurance for my daughter when she was around three. She was born in 1984 and is turning 25 this month. I have never been sorry that I bought the Gerber policy. If anything should happen to her, I know I would be completely nonfunctional for a long time. This is one bill that I never mind paying – $95.00 – once a year." - Linda, Saginaw, Michigan, Round Table Insurance

The Gerber Logo makes me smile, -in Africa where literacy rates are low it is common practice for consumer food products to show only images of what the jar or box contains, so the GERBER baby Logo was ...mistaken by some to indicate that the jars of mush were made from guessed it, babies! Gerber changed their branding for Africa, using just-text for branding and showing instead images of what the product was (bananas, apple sauce, squash, etc etc...)
